It was a gathering that left scribes starry-eyed with the number of big names present at this single sitting.

The mood was light and the chatter high at the press conference held at MediaCorp to announce the 40 nominees for the Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes.

Unlike other categories in the Star Awards, these 40 stars have been chosen by the public and will not be subjected to panelist judging.

The final 20 celebrities (10 each for Male and Female categories) will be chosen, again by the public, through individual telepoll number votings that will lead right up to Star Awards 2001 on November 25.

Familiar faces
The run this year for the coveted 20 spots is largely anchored by veterans who have made the list numerous times in previous years.

We see familiars like Terence Cao, Chen Hanwei, Vincent Ng, Xie Shaoguang, Chew Chor Meng, Tay Ping Hui and Li Nanxing.

Expectedly dominating the Female list again are Ivy Lee, Sharon Au, Phyllis Quek, Yvonne Lim, Pan Lingling, May Phua, Cynthia Koh, Tracer Wong and of course the newly-married Zoe Tay.

· Check out who made the list last year

The cast of this year's touted big-winner drama Three Women and a Half, Huang Biren, Huang Wenyong and Aileen Tan, pose a great challenge to contenders with their indelible screen success.

Meanwhile, two's a good number for golden couples, Edmund Chen and Xiang Yun, Chen Liping and Rayson Tan. Both partners are up for nominations in these same categories and oft-linked pair Christopher Lee and Fann Wong makes it in as well.

The ever-popular J-Team of Jack Neo, Henry Thia, Mark Lee and Patricia Mok almost seem to have a guaranteed place in the Top 10 list year after year. With only sifu Jack getting into 2000's list, let's see if the whole posse manages to make the mark this time round.

So what's new?
Despite the usual romp, there are a few surprises in the bag this year.

New on the list are refreshed actors Edmund Chen, Huang Yiliang, Lilin and virgin nominees Nick Shen, Vivian Lai, Wendy Tseng and Fiona Xie.

Glaringly missing from the race however, are Jeff Wang and Wang Deyuan, hosts of the soon-to-return City Beat and Travel Hunt respectively, and Priscelia Chan who appeared in 2 popular drama series, Beyond the Axis of Truth and A War Diary.

Hot young China-born Qi Yiwu, too, has not managed to make a strong enough presence on-screen to be nominated while Florence Tan only made it to the recently established Most Popular Female Artists in Malaysia list this year.
