What do Hong Huifang, Chen Hanwei and Chen Liping have in common? Clueless? Think again. The key word here is Star Awards.

Hanwei and Liping now share more than a common surname and screen time in sitcom Don't Worry, Be Happy VI.

Thanks to the roles, which garnered them nominations in Best Actor and Best Actress respectively this year, they now have another common characteristic - buckteeth appeal.

Hong Huifang defeated her opponents in Star Awards 1997 with her buckteeth image and superb acting skills in Price Of Peace.

Now 4 years later, the buckteeth appeal returns. Now in the form of Lin Yiqin Love Me, Love Me Not and Jiang Meiqi in Beyond The Axis Of Truth, it aims to create another round of bustle in Star Awards 2001.

Buckteeth rules?

We caught Hanwei unawares when we congratulated him on his nomination; he thought we were referring to his Best Drama Performance by an Actor nomination (Love Me, Love Me Not) for the Asian Television Awards

"Really? The nomination list is out? Best Actor? Wow…I'm happy of course," said Hanwei when he heard. "I did spent a lot of time and effort over this character. Being nominated is a big encouragement."

In his 13 years in the entertainment industry, this is his third nomination in the Best Actor category, the first after his return to acting from his short break into image styling. The other 2 nominations are for his acting in The Morning Express I and II.

The modest actor expressed that he is satisfied with his performance in the serial. "My image is indeed unusual and very eye-catching, but I would leave rating to the judges. As for the other contenders, I'm afraid I can't comment as I didn't really follow their performance."

Admitting that the breakthrough in his acting genre and image helped in his nomination, Hanwei did not think that buckteeth is an advantage when it comes to clinching the award, even though we quoted Huifang's example and Liping's nomination.

"It's just an coincidence, I suppose. Our background and portrayal are different. Huifang's role is a tragic figure. Liping's look is rather scary and I'm a comic personality."

"Moreover, there's a difference in our teeth. Huifang's teeth were protruding outwards, mine showed the gums while Liping's teeth were deformed," reasoned Hanwei. It is obvious that this is one observant and analytical guy.

"These were all part of the storyline. Besides the portrayal of the role, having a special image is more attention grabbing."

Indeed it is. His character's 'duh' look and the way he walked or wore his pants is still vivid in my mind and it never fails to bring an amused smile to my lips.
