Will Aileen sizzle her way to Best Actress?

November 7, 2001

Will Aileen finally get to flaunt the Best Actress award with her 'If-you-have-it-flaunt-it' performance in Three Women And A Half?

By Yap Geok Hui

Since her debut into the entertainment industry as Star Search 1988 first runner-up in 1988, she has acted in close to 40 productions - serials, sitcoms, telemovies, musical and recently English dramas (Growing Up). However, one genre she has not tried is period dramas.

But the veteran actress has no regrets, "I just don't have the face for period dramas, so I won't insist. Besides, contemporary dramas are much more convenient. I can just go home straight away after filming without having to remove my make-up and costume first."

Aileen Tan's acting ability is without a doubt. But notwithstanding, for the past 13 years of her career, Aileen has had her share of ups and downs.

Having stepped into showbiz at the same time as Zoe Tay, comparisons had invariably been made. However, her hard work and polished acting skills have not gone unnoticed, especially to her loving and loyal fans, who have stood by her all these years.

It is their faithful support and encouragement, in addition to her passion for acting that keeps Aileen going, from SBC (Singapore Broadcasting Corporation) to TCS (Television Corporation of Singapore) to the present MediaCorp.

After her 1997 nomination in the Best Actress category for Grandpa's Bak Kut Teh, which she lost to Carole Lin (Price Of Peace), Aileen is back in the hot seat this year as the sexy, go-getter Jane who has no qualms about using her assets to climb the corporate ladder, in Three Women And A Half.

"I'm happy, of course. Being nominated is encouraging. I'm thankful to my family, friends and fans." Huang Wenyong had SMS her the good news right after he accepted our interview.

"I didn't expect the nomination. I even thought that there would probably be no Star Awards this year because of the American crisis and war," revealed Aileen.

"Which award do I covet the most? It has to be Best Actress of course. Each role I took on is the one painstaking effort. Every drop of perspiration or tear is real. I would like to win it for all those who have been supporting me all these years," said Aileen enthusiastically.

Beneath that ultra feminine image in Three Women And A Half is a woman who loves to wear pants.

"I don't know why I'm always cast in roles, which require me to wear skirts and heels. It's not my type."

But think of her sexy and voluptuous image in musical, I Have A Date With Spring, in 1997 and a sizzling, sensual woman comes to the mind.

"I don't know why others look upon me as sexy and womanly. I do not see myself this way."

Producers, casting agents and hordes of male fans (after Three Women And A Half came on) would have to disagree with Aileen on that.

Even though the real Aileen off TV is simple in dressing, her screen image may be too vivid in the minds of viewers.

After all, Aileen's mature charms are very attractive.

Which is her favourite or most memorable role?

"None. All my roles have their distinctiveness and all are memorable. There are always new things to learn," said Aileen with about the same mentality as if asked to pick her favourite child.

She went on to elaborate on the uniqueness of each role, "In Good Morning, Sir, I was still exploring the art of acting. Bond Of Love (named the best family drama in Sarawak) was the first drama when I did real voice shooting and which I acted as an abandoned wife, who had to cry all the time."

"Crimes & Tribulations: In the Face Of Death for it is based on a true story. Professor Zhao Zhicheng was still around when we filmed Dr Justice in 1994. I played a mom for the first time in My Little Angels.

"For Three Women And A Half, it was my first time working with Wenyong and it was really hard work. We need to wrap up filming in 2 months and it was really scene after scene after scene."

Hopefully , Aileen's hard work will pay off on November 25, the night of Star Awards 2001. Best wishes, Aileen.
